Germanium crystals are a top choice for X-ray sensor arrays, particularly in high-performance applications, because they outperform other semiconductors like silicon. A key advantage is Germanium's high atomic number.
This is a critical factor for X-ray detection because it greatly increases the probability of a photoelectric absorption event. In this desired interaction, an incoming X-ray photon is completely absorbed, and its energy is converted into a detectable signal.
For higher-energy X-rays, germanium is significantly more efficient at stopping and detecting photons than silicon. We offer both Vertical Gradient Freeze (VGF) and Czochralski (Cz) grown crystals for this application.
